Title : Pilot Fitz Fulton in CID (Controlled Impact Demonstration) Simulator

Caption :

Pilot Fitz Fulton is seen here in the CID (Controlled Impact Demonstration) Simulator. In 1984, NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center flew a modified Boeing 720 as an RPRV (Remotely Piloted Research Vehicle) and deliberately crashed it on a dry lakebed runway to demonstrate a fuel additive that was designed to inhibit ignition and suppress fire. The landing site included heavy barriers that tore open the wing fuel tanks. In addition the aircraft contained a large number of instrumented dummies to measure the damage and loads. There were 13 preliminary flights and one final flight with crash, all flown from the cockpit in the RPRV lab.
