The most powerful communications satellite built to date, the 17.5-kW Anik F1, is shown prior to shipment to French Guiana for launch on an Ariane rocket. The Boeing 702 model spacecraft is the ninth to be built for Telesat Canada in a relationship that spans nearly 30 years. It is also the third Boeing 702 satellite to launch since the model was introduced in 1996. Anik F1 will provide 15 times the power and four times the capacity of Telesat's first-generation models. A total of 102 transponders, 84 active, will provide general telecommunications services for North and South America from Telesat's operating slot of 107.3 degrees West longitude. The name 'Anik' means 'little brother' in the Inuit language.
