On August 18, 2002, Typhoon Phanfone moved slowly north along the coast of Japan, dumping over 9 inches of rain on parts of the island nation and generating winds of over 76 miles (126 kilometers) per hour. This image of the typhoon was taken on August 18. The typhoon caused no deaths and led to some transportation disruptions along the Japanese coast. Phanfone is expected to continue traveling up the coast of Japan and dissipate into a tropical storm without coming aground on the main island.
