Technicians at Boeing Satellite Systems, Inc. (BSS), formerly Hughes Space and Communications Company, prepare the Thuraya-1 satellite for shipment to Sea Launch for an upcoming launch. The first high-power Boeing GEM satellite, Thuraya-1 will extend mobile communication capabilities to more than 1.8 billion people in the Middle East, North and Central Africa, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The system has the capacity for 13,750 simultaneous telephone calls. On-board digital signal processing will route the calls directly from one handheld set to another, or to a terrestrial network.
